Hammersmith Vintage Fair

I paid a visit to the Hammersmith Vintage Fair the other week as it’s supposed to be one of the best in London. There were some lovely pieces – lots of furs and antique dresses – as well as the usual reams of hats, scarves and handbags. I found this market to be a little quaint compared to other vintage fashion markets, full of hardcore, very experienced traders, who really knew their stuff.

Unfortunately the outfits were a little out of my price range but I did settle for a very cool 1962 edition of Vogue, with a tribute to Marilyn Monroe! I could spend hours just flicking through the ads….

Latest finds: Sage and buttercups!

For anyone who’s missing the Indian summer like I am, here’s a visual, sunny treat. I stumbled across this gorgeous sage green 1960′s shift recently, which would be fantastic for a winter wedding, and will eventually find it’s way into my shop. As well as this super cool, plastic over-the-shoulder mod bag in a beautiful shade of buttercup, which you don’t see very often. I can’t wait to style this up with outfits in the next photoshoot. I might have to dig out my Quadrophenia DVD for added inspiration…

Jarvis & Janis: the brand

Wow, what a whirlwind few weeks! Now that I’ve finally caught my breath I can write a bit about how I got to the point where I finally launched my little business.

I’ve, perhaps unwisely, taken on a lot lately: not only the launch of a new business while I’m holding down a day job doing PR and events, but also a night school course in fashion design. But I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by hugely supportive people (you know who you are!) which makes it all a little less daunting.

It’s still early days for Jarvis and Janis so there’s still a lot to do but I’ve chosen to view it as a work in progress, rather than something that has to be perfect from the outset (if only to stay sane!)

Two of the biggest pieces of work included the buying up and cleaning up of good vintage stock and organising a photo shoot. But even before that came choosing the boutique name and getting a logo designed. Two other big pieces of work included getting the boutique online and establishing some sort of brand personality.

Enter ASOS.com

Having gained some experience in shooting street style photography (an absolute must for ASOS Marketplace) I felt pretty confident my application for a Marketplace boutique would be accepted. That was until I read that relatively few applications get accepted, after which point I was
Tremble Central! I had a plan b but it was nowhere near as fun as ASOS. When I got the go-ahead I was over the moon and bubbles were consumed, it has to be said! I just love the up-for-it attitude and down to earth tone of voice, from their website and customer service right through to the back end workings of Marketplace. I absolutely love dealing with ASOS and feel very proud to call it our home.

Once my link came through, I couldn’t tear myself away from uploading the products and I definitely burned the midnight oil. But seeing all my lovely garments on the site was an amazing feeling and still makes me tingle!

And look! Within days, some of my pics were selected for the very prestigious People’s Runway…

So, howdy!

Developing the brand personality is the most in-progress area. Coming from a retail background, customer service is really important to me, as well as customer experience. I don’t want to simply ship out products like a conveyor belt or have a faceless business. I want to make the process as enjoyable for myself as it is for the customer. I’ve been putting little handwritten cards in the package, specially stamped with a bright pink bespoke stamp I’ve had made, which I love! (I’m having to resist the temptation to stamp everything in sight.)

And today I received my first feedback!

ASOS Marketplace also provides a blog facility so I’ve been posting on there to give the brand a voice and a bit of depth. (And I thought managing one blog was going to be a challenge!)

Other ways I’ve been beginning to build the brand are through social networking. I’ve set up a new Facebook page and changed the name of my Twitter account to @jarvisandjanis. Take a look!

So that’s how I spent the last part of October! I have a whole new set of goals for the rest of 2011 (can you believe another whole year has gone by!) which I’ll blog about soon. In the meantime check out Jarvis and Janis for yourselves…

My wonderful world of fashion

How cute is this book? I picked it up in a local shop and immediately it whisked me off down Memory Lane to the age of about 5 when I used to love nothing more than colouring. But this one is like a colouring book for grown-ups! Featuring Vivienne Westwood shoes and everything! In the same way that sewing and crafting can be a relaxing, sometimes nostalgic way to spend an evening, so too, in my book (no pun intended,) is colouring. Fun!

Behind the scenes

Last week I promised to post up here some behind the scenes pics from my first photoshoot for Jarvis and Janis (which, incidentally, is going very well, I’m super pleased!) So, courtesy of fabulous photographer Chris Brock, here are a selection of photos that give a little bit of an insight into how my first shoot was put together!

Moodboards and make-up at the ready…

Can’t do a shoot without handbags and shoes!

The lovely Lucy doing Blioux’s make-up. We went for a smoky eye and pale lip to complement the predominantly 60′s and 70′s outfits.

Blioux channelling Twiggy in an amazing Peter Pan collar shift.

And lots more outfit pics to go!

It’s amazing how tiring it is to dress up and take photos, but it was a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to do my second J&J shoot now. If you haven’t checked out my boutique yet, here it is!

Jarvis & Janis: the launch

At midnight on Thursday 27th October, I finally clicked the ‘go live’ button on my brand new Jarvis and Janis boutique on ASOS, having spent nearly the whole day getting to grips with the technology and uploading photographs and product descriptions. I have to say though, seeing the finished boutique with all the gorgeous garments looking really cool on model Blioux, made me feel extremely proud! I was very keen to ensure the boutique echoed my thrifty mantra Style, Sustain, Nostalgia, and I intend to keep the garment prices reasonable because I genuinely want to encourage people to shop in a more sustainable way.

As well as the photo shoot, over the last couple of weeks I’ve been manically double checking my shipping costs, selecting all my packaging materials, creating delivery note templates, seeking out new stock, setting up facebook pages and tweeting about the launch. Phew! If it wasn’t for all the excitement, I’d be ready for a big lie down!

I’ll post up some behind the scenes pics and ‘lookbook’ shots over the next week or so but first, here are some of my favourite product photos…

Photo shoot prep

I know, I know, guilty as charged. I have neglected the blog of late, for one very good reason: I am about to launch my vintage fashion collection on one of the biggest and best fashion websites of all time… ASOS.com! Trembles.

In the relatively short space of time since my Marketplace Boutique was confirmed, I’ve been pulling together moodboards and styleboards like a mad woman, trying to articulate what I want my photographs to look like, as well as organising a model (thankyou Blioux!), make-up and styling (the fabulous Lucy McG) and photographer du jour (the super talented Chris Brock.) Not to mention praying every night for decent weather, because street photography is THE order of the day for ASOS Marketplace. This clearly paid off and we had the most glorious two days – perfect!

So this is a very quick post to give a little glimpse in the chaos that has been the last two weeks. Only three more days to go and I’ll be able to unveil the shiny new Jarvis & Janis Boutique! And normal (blog) service will be resumed.

With 30+ outfits to get through in one day, clothes hung up in shot list order certainly helped…

Styling boards helped to keep ideas flowing through the shoot.

A bit more work went into the moodboards for the hero shots. Thanks to the involvement of a professional photographer, the results were amazing – I’ll show those pics soon!

And on to the shoot: Model Blioux getting the full sixties treatment in make-up.

Watch this space for more pics from the shoot itself and some very cool styling ideas :-)

Back to (fashion) school

One of my big goals for October included embarking on a fashion design/pattern-cutting course, which I have! And I absolutely love it! At the grand old age of, ahem, mid-thirties, I am finally enjoying school. I’ve been taking a few iphone pics to chronicle my progress so I thought I’d share a few here…

Here are some fashion-over-the-years moodboards compiled by other students. Loving the lace.

A collection of tailor’s busts. So fashion, darling.

Some rickety old sewing machines with which I’m sure many a seamstress has learned her craft. Or ‘seamster’ (is that a word?)

My first moodboard. We had to pick a show by the amazing Alexander McQueen to base our moodboards on.

My first quarter scale skirt block! The lighting is poor on this pic I’m afraid. That’s because I was up sketching in the early hours; it’s the kind of work I just can’t put down :-)

Renegade comes to the UK

The daddy of all craft fair’s, Renegade, came to London last weekend. And having read so much about it on my favourite American craft blogs, I decided to go along and see it for myself. Housed in the Truman Brewery on Brick Lane, London, it boasted around 30 or 40 craft stalls ranging from stationery design, prints, clothing and various sewing and knitting workshops. I had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon wandering round taking pictures and signing up to mailing lists in return for cute pin badges! Here are some pics of my favourite stalls…

New logo revealed!

My plans to set up a little vintage fashion business have been gradually moving forward since I posted my goals for October. The first milestone was deciding on a name for the business and briefing a designer to come up with some concepts. I was oddly uninspired when it came to choosing a name – there are just so many options out there. So I decided to go for a name that was fun and catchy as well as a little nostalgic. Drum roll please…..

The new business name is: Jarvis & Janis!! These happen to be the names of two of my big idols – both musically and stylistically – Jarvis Cocker (of Pulp fame) and Janis Joplin (who needs no further explanation.) Pulp is probably my favourite band of all time and they also happen to come from my hometown Sheffield. And Jarvis Cocker was the man who inspired me to shun TopShop for Oxfam and bring home velvet jackets from the seventies that my mum would insist on washing at least three times before I could actually wear them. And I have endless admiration for Janis Joplin – her incredible voice and bohemian style. And together, the names Jarvis and Janis are quite catchy I think.

So, without further ado, I can also reveal the fabulous, shiny new logo that the brilliant Bryony Watson designed for me.

Isn’t it beeeuuwwwwdiful? I couldn’t decide whether I preferred pink or purple so I’ve got both. I love the Victorian style sloping font coupled with the current and fashion-centric tailor’s bust. It’s the perfect combination of nostalgia and new-ness. I’m a very happy bunny! X
